Sofia Vergara freezing her eggs is a bad idea

Sometimes I think it would be better if we went back to a time when women didn't talk about their age quite so much. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great when actresses, like Sofia Vergara, show the world that age has nothing to do with beauty but the more we talk about our age, the more we talk about having babies. The more we talk about having babies, the more I know about people's eggs. I really don't want to know about Sofia's eggs, but here she is, on the cover of InStyle magazine, talking about how on the eve of her 40th birthday, she will be freezing her eggs in case she decides she wants to have a baby with her man, Nick Loeb.

Because then I will have to care and I have a full time job and a 19-month-old and a man and a family and I really have no time to care.

But I do and I think it is a terrible idea for her older son, Manolo.

First, information about his mother's eggs is all over the Interweb, which has to be mortifying for any 19-year-old. Second, and more importantly, I am not sure if Sofia has thought through the consequences for siblings who are so different in age.

I have a sister who is thirteen years older than me. While we have a great relationship now, it was difficult for a long time. She had incredibly different parents than I did. Her parents had no money, my parents owned their own business. Her parents were young and strict, my parents were older and more relaxed. She had cousins her age, I had a lot of grown-ups around all the time. She thought she was the boss of me, I thought she should leave me alone. Our own children are now 10 years apart in age.

One of the best things about having siblings is that they are a person in the world who share your experiences in a way that no one else can. At 19 (or 20 or 21) years older, Manolo will be more like baby-to-be-named-later's uncle. And when Manolo has his own family in a few years, will their auntie really be more like their cousin?

I don't know Sofia, I know it seems like a good idea but why be a mami when you are so close to being an abuelita?

What do you think? Should Sofia have a baby now?
