We all know about the health benefits of sex and now there's even more! According to a study conducted by the University of Pavia in Italy, it turns out sex may also make us smarter and alert. The study was tested blood on three groups of people: Those in new relationships, long term relationships, and singles. However, researchers found that those in newer relationships were the ones who reaped the benefits of higher levels of nerve health--which helps mental alertness.

Stress levels were also lowered due to sex and MANY other health advantages came along with it as well. So why is sex so good for you--besides the obvious--and what else can you benefit from it?   

I do believe that a healthy sex life is important for a relationship and to remain mostly at peace with each other. I mean, the more orgasms you have, the least likely you are to fight about petty things, since you'll be happier...right?

A separate study performed on rats at Princeton University, placed them into two groups in which some rodents had sex daily for two weeks, while the others were deprived. The results were drastic and showed that the rats that had more sex not only had lower stress levels, but also had increased nerve health. This also showed that sex helps increase the number of brain cells we have in the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning--hence why we become smarter.

Even more interesting is that researchers found that stress and depression shrink the hippocampus. But those who have an active sex life fight off the shrinkage and are least likely to have dementia. This is possibly due to improved oxygen levels that are caused by the blood flow to the brain. Rutgers Professor of psychology, Barry Komisaruk says:

"MRI scans have shown that during orgasms the neurons in the brain are more active and use more oxygen," adding, "It appears that the more active the neurons, the more oxygen they withdraw from the blood — so more oxygenated blood is supplied to the region, delivering a fresh supply of nutrients."

And women especially benefit from sex because the testosterone hormones released during the act increases concentration and reaction times. Relationship expert, Tracey Cox explains that studies have shown that because of the high levels of oxytocin released during sex, you get better sleep. She also mentions that men who experience orgasms a few times a week are more likely to live longer.

It's amazing how a primitive need can benefit us a lot more than we bargained for. Sure an orgasm is great, but it's also good to know that by having sex we can stave off dementia, get better sleep, and become smarter. So next time you come up with excuses to avoid having sex with your man, think of all the health advantages that can come from it for the two of you!
