Whether they admit it or not, most people have Googled or Facebook searched a potential love interest at some point or another. I know I have! That's why I was not at all surprised when a new survey conducted by eHarmony showed that nearly half of women AND men look up dates online before going out with them!

The online dating site polled over 2,000 men and women about their dating preferences and concluded that 43 percent of men and 54 percent of women have "cyber stalked" potential dates--and I am not ashamed to admit that I am one of them!  Maybe it's having grown up in a technologically driven generation, but I think gathering a little information on possible love interests is a completely normal and even necessary move if you're single and dating.

Why? Well, for starters, it's kind of a matter of safety. If you Google your date's name and he comes up the Most Wanted list somewhere, then you probably want to scratch him off your "Potential Boyfriend/Husband/Father of My Children" list. Likewise, if you're a guy, you might want to rethink your plans if your date has just tweeted about how much it sucks to get arrested.  Hey, someone might look innocent but you can never really tell with people these days.

Plus, I think doing a preliminary online search can actually give you insight into more practical matters. I'm not saying you can tell the entirety of an individual's personality by checking out their Facebook page, but you can find out smaller details. I mean, if you know you hate dogs and your date uploads a picture of their Chihuahua every day, then they probably won't be a good match.  On the other hand, you might find out that they're a hardcore Yankees fan just like you!

But that being said, there is a fine line between a quick Google search that stems out of curiosity and actual cyber stalking...and I definitely do NOT advocate the latter. So if you find yourself constantly refreshing your potential date's Twitter page, I urge you to step away from the computer and breathe. They might be perfect on paper (or online), but at the end of the day, nothing beats in-person chemistry!
