Addiction is a disease that doesn't discriminate. It can affect anyone, no matter how much success or money they have. Some celebrities who have been affected by addiction have been open books when it comes to talking about their struggles.

For some stars, their dependence on drugs or alcohol has affected their careers completely, while others have learned to manage their disease and have had major comebacks after seeking professional help. Many stars have been able to enter rehabilitation centers and get treatment to get a handle on their issues, but unfortunately for others, their addictions eventually took a toll on their lives.

Celebrities including Justin BieberDemi Lovato, Eva Mendes, and Mariah Carey have gone into treatment. These stars and others have shared how their choice to seek help had a positive impact on their lives. The battle is endless, and for some people, even after being sober for years, a relapse can happen. Demi has been someone who has been transparent about her struggles, and many fans were affected when she relapsed in July 2018, after she had been sober for six years. 

These stars being so real and open about their imperfections can be inspiring to fans who are dealing with similar issues or if they know people close to them who are. Their openness can provide people with inspiration to enter rehab and to live a cleaner lifestyle. Addiction shouldn't be a taboo topic in society, because the only way to get through it is to reach out and ask for help. Justin has been giving fans an inside look at his personal struggles of his life in his YouTube docuseries Justin Bieber: Seasons. In an episode titled "The Dark Season" he detailed his struggles with health issues as well as his past drug use. The singer said he was just "12 or 13" when he first smoked marijuana and it then evolved into serious addictions, like "popping pills" and "sipping lean." He said he used drugs as an "escape" and it became frightening. "I decided to stop because ... I was like, dying," he said on the docuseries. "My security were coming into the room at night to check my pulse. People don't know how serious it got. It was legit crazy-scary."

The singer revealed in her memoir Open Book that she was drinking heavily and medicating with pills in order to cope with being sexually abused as a child. She revealed she got sober in November 2017 and hasn't had a drink since. "I was killing myself with all the drinking and pills," she wrote. "Giving up the alcohol was easy. I was mad at that bottle. At how it allowed me to stay complacent and numb."

The actor revealed to The New York Times that he had attended Alcoholics Anonymous group meetings for a year and a half following his divorce from Angelina Jolie in 2016. “I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges,” he told the newspaper, describing his experience in AA. “You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard. It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself.”

The singer has said that she has dealt with drug addiction in the past, and has tried different substances since she was younger. “I have been addicted to it and it’s ultimately related to anxiety coping and it’s a form of self-medication and I was smoking up to 15-20 marijuana cigarettes a day with no tobacco,” she told radio station Z100. “I was living on a totally other psychedelic plane, numbing myself completely, and looking back I do see now that some of it had to do with my hip pain … I didn’t know where the pain was coming from so I was just in a lot of pain and very depressed all the time and not really sure why.”

We don't need to fill you in on Demi's story--you know all about it. And the reason you know all about it, is that Demi has bravely told her story over and over again in the hopes that it will help other addicts beat the illness. If that's not inspiring, we don't know what is! The actress was admitted into a hospital in July 2018 for an apparent overdose, ending her six years of sobriety.

Selena Gomez voluntarily checked into rehab in January 2014. The reason why is still unclear. While her camp maintains it was for exhaustion, not for substance abuse, other sources are claiming she actually sought help after her family grew concerned with her experimentation with alcohol, pot, and Ambien.

In December of 2005, the Fast and the Furious star was busted for driving under the influence (and it wasn’t the first time). As a result, she was sentenced to 60 days in jail and ordered to complete a 30-day alcohol rehabilitation program. Michelle is one of the most successful Latina movie stars in Hollywood and she's been delivering brilliant performances in films like Avatar, Fast & Furious 6, and Machete Kills. Go, Michelle!

Oscar has struggled with alcohol and cocaine abuse for years and in 2013, the Mexican American boxer voluntarily checked himself into rehab to battle these issues. "This is the biggest fight of my life," he previously told Univision. “I could put all my opponents in one ring and battle all of them, but this monster is going to be the toughest fight of my life."

ABC News journalist and 20/20 co-anchor Elizabeth Vargas returned to rehab due to issues with alcohol dependency in 2014. The reporter originally checked into rehab after coming out publicly about her battle with addiction in November 2013. During that time, Vargas also divorced her husband of 12 years, Marc Cohen. She released a heartfelt statement about her relapse: "As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process. I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry."

Of all the celebs who have gone to rehab in Hollywood, Nicole Richie has undoubtedly undergone the biggest transformation. The former Simple Life star--who allegedly entered rehab for an addiction to heroin--has transformed into the responsible mother of two beautiful children: Harlow Winter Kate Madden and son Sparrow James Midnight Madden. "People ask me, do I blame Hollywood or my parents?" Nicole told InStyle U.K. in 2010. "No, I don't blame my parents. It had nothing to do with them. I created it and manifested it, and I got myself through it with the help of a lot of great people," she said.

She may be one of the most gifted artists of all time--and a great mom to Moroccan and Monroe--but Mariah Carey has dealt with addiction. In 2001, Mimi was hospitalized for extreme exhaustion and a physical and emotional breakdown and she stayed under medical supervision for two weeks. Since then, there have been several rumors about her being addicted to alcohol or drugs.

Pablo Montero has also been battling with addiction. 12

The singer was ordered to enter rehab in 2007, after he was arrested in Miami while driving and a bag of what authorities later revealed was cocaine was found in his car.

We were surprised when Eva Mendes entered rehab in 2008, but we were also impressed by her courage. "I'm proud of people who have the determination and the fearlessness to actually go and face their demons and get better," she said of her decision to get help. "This is a life or death situation."

The late singer is said to have started drinking at the age of 15 when his alcoholic father left his family. His drinking habit eventually led him to develop a cocaine habit. 


Mauricio Ochmann came clean about his past. 17

The El Señor de Los Cielos actor revealed that due to his past, he became addicted to drugs and alcohol at the beginning of his career. Mauricio, who was adopted and never met his biological parents, opened up about his troubled past in 2014 and said he had his first beer when he was 8.

In January 2011, the actor checked himself into rehab. "Charlie Sheen has voluntarily entered an undisclosed rehabilitation center today," the actor's publicist Stan Rosenfield said in a statement at the time. "He is most grateful to all who have expressed their concern." After he was fired from Two and a Half Men, Charlie managed to launch yet another successful sitcom, Anger Management, which ran for two seasons.


Robert Downey Jr. served time in prison because of his addictions. 19

The Iron Man actor had his fair share issues in the 1990s, so much so that his drug-related arrests led to a halt in his career. After a stint in rehab and three years in prison, the actor decided to get clean and made his career comeback in 2008.

The incredible singer revealed that she decided to get help after she forgot the lyrics to her own songs during a concert because of how intoxicated she was. 


Drew Barrymore has one of the most well-known addiction stories. 21

As a child actor, Drew was exposed to alcohol and drugs early on. She entered rehab at the young age of 14 to battle her alcohol and drug abuse.

Whitney's relationship with drugs was highly publicized in the media. Her addiction eventually led to her untimely death in 2012, and local authorities said the toxicology report determined she had drugs in her system at the time of her passing.


Zac Efron is another troubled Disney Channel star. 23

The 17 Again actor went to rehab in 2013, but didn't open up about why he sought treatment until an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2014. "I was drinking a lot, way too much," he said at the time, and shared drugs were also a problem. "It's never one specific thing. I mean, you're in your 20s, single, going through life in Hollywood, you know? Everything is thrown at you. I wouldn't take anything back; I needed to learn everything I did. But it was an interesting journey, to say the least."

The Mexican actor opened up about his battle with alcoholism in 2013 on El Gordo y La Flaca and revealed he dealt with the addiction for five years before he was able to get sober.
