A California woman was sentenced to 55 years to life in prison after hitting a pedestrian with her car while driving drunk and then continuing to maneuver the car through an L.A. suburb with the dying man STILL on her windshield. Seriously, what is wrong with people?

A jury convicted 53-year-old Sherri Lynn Wilkins, who prosecutors say had a blood-alcohol level of nearly twice the legal limit at the time, of second-degree murder, hit-and-run, and driving under the influence. The kicker? Wilkins is actually a substance-abuse counselor. So how did things spin so terribly out of control?

Wilkins struck 31-year-old Phillip Moreno in November 2012 as she was leaving a counseling center. She drove a full 2 miles through the city with the man still on her windshield before other drivers noticed and swarmed the car a traffic light to keep her in place before police arrived. Moreno was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Wilkins, who was reportedly a drug addict before becoming a drug and alcohol counselor, insisted she wasn't drunk that night, but admitted to "self-medicating" while waiting for knee-replacement surgery. She had reportedly consumed three single-serving bottles of vodka and a can of Budweiser beer and Clamato before starting to drive.

Obviously, any kind of substance addiction is a continuing battle and clearly, Wilkins was not in a stable state of mind when this happened. That being said, her actions are inexcusable. Not only did she get behind the wheel drunk and hit an innocent pedestrian, but to then be so cruel as to flee the scene with the injured victim still on her car? It's just horrible and she deserves to pay the consequences. My heart goes out to all of Moreno's family and loved ones.
