To a parent, nothing is worse than knowing someone hurt your child. That's why I wasn't surprised to hear about the controversy surrounding a case out of Spain, in which mother in Spain who killed her teen daughter's rapist was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in jail.

According to reports, Maria del Carmen Garcia's daughter was only 13 when she was raped in 1998. Her rapist was sentenced to nine years in prison but only served six before getting parole in 2005. That would be a heartbreaking ordeal for any parent, but it was made even worse when Garcia actually saw the attacker while he was out. That's when things spiraled out of control.

When Garcia saw the man responsible for the rape out on parole, he actually had the nerve to ask, "How's your daughter?" Ugh, there are no words to describe how disgusting that is. The snide comment sent the mom into such a rage that she retaliated by taking his life. Garcia set her daughter's attacker on fire, causing severe burns that eventually killed him. But while the court found her guilty, many are now pleading for her to be pardoned.

Initially, Garcia was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years, but her punishment was eventually reduced. She entered jail to begin her sentence this week.

Nothing excuses taking a life and I don't justify Garcia's crime by any means. That being said, I can't say I don't understand her actions. It's horrific enough for any mom to know that her daughter was attacked and that the attacker got out of jail early. But to then see him and know that he still has no remorse for what he did? Any parent in that situation would be devastated and angry--probably more than angry enough to hurt the person responsible.

Again, I don't think taking justice into your own hands is a good idea, but I do get the overwhelming need to protect your child.  And I'm not the only one. Around 20 organizations in Spain are calling for the mom to be pardoned.
