Honda has announced it's recalling 886,815 Odyssey minivans because they can catch fire. How scary is that? Like many suburban moms with small kids, I drive a Honda Odyssey minivan. That's why I freaked out as soon as my husband told me about it. Luckily, ours is not involved in the recall.

Here's what you need to know to check if your's is and what to do next:

Models involved: 2005 to 2010 built in Honda's plant in Alabama.

Problem: The cover in the fuel pump strainer can deteriorate due to exposure to high temperatures and acid chemicals like the ones used in cars washes and fertilizers. The deterioration can cause cracks which can lead to fuel smells or leaks, which increases the risk of fire.

Solution: Because this is a huge recall involving nearly one million minivans, Honda won't have the replacement parts until the summer. In the meantime, owners will be notified in April so they can get a temporary repair.

Luckily there have been no reports of fires, crashes or injuries related to this defect so far. And hopefully this massive recall will prevent any tragedies.

The most important thing for you to know is that if your Odyssey is involved in the recall, once you get the notice from Honda you should not ignore it. Make an appointment as soon as possible so you can get the temporary fix and then follow-up once the permanent replacement is available this summer.
