In what could be a heartbreaking end to a months-long case, cops have recently revealed that they're investigating whether an arm and legs found near a Queens shoreline on Thursday are those of missing autistic teen Avonte Oquendo.

Oquendo first went missing from his school in Queens back in early October, sparking a city-wide search that has lasted more than three months. Now, authorities fear that the human remains are likely those of the teen.

According to a police statement, officers responded to a 911 call from an unidentified teen about remains found on the rocks of Powell's Cove in College Point. Upon investigation, cops found several limbs, as well as a sneaker, but have not yet positively identified either as Oquendo's.

The remains were taken to the local morgue, where a medical examiner will determine the cause of death. Police were still scouring the scene last night and planned to continue their search on daylight on Friday.

This is heartbreaking beyond words. As someone who has both written about this case and who lives in New York and has seen the countless fliers begging for Oquendo's return, I've thought about Avonte and his family often and, like many others, have hoped and prayed for a positive outcome. It's hard to believe this could be the horrifying, tragic end.

I can't even begin to imagine the mix of emotions his parents and loved ones must be feeling now, especially since they've been looking for answers so long. The truth is, whatever the results of this investigation are, there is no happy ending: Oquendo is either gone or still missing. I only hope that his relatives and friends can find a way to get through this incredibly difficult time together. My heart goes out to all of them!
