Elizabeth Smart's evil abductors made her feel like she wasn't human
On June 5, 2002 Elizabeth Smart was 14 years old when she was kidnapped from her Utah bedroom at knifepoint by homeless religious fanatic Brian David Mitchell. She was held captive by Mitchell and his wife Wanda Barzee for 9 horrifying months. Thanks to a passerby who spotted Mitchell and recognized him from America's Most Wanted and called the police, Smart's captivity and daily rapes came to an end and she was reunited with her family. Now, at 25 she is telling her story and it's unbelievable.

Next week, Smart's book My Story, in which she shares details of what she went through during her abduction will be released. In an interview that she gave to NBC News' Merideth Viera for a special set to air this Friday, Smart talks about being stripped of her dignity. She says she "didn't even feel human." Most horrific? "To her, I was a slave, and to him, I was an object."
Since Smart's abduction and recovery, she has more than shown the world her humanity and dignity. Her testimony helped put both Mitchell and Barzee behind bars, she's gotten married to Matthew Gillmour, and she started the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, which is dedicated is dedicated to help prevent crimes against children.
I'm so impressed by Smart. She went through something so awful that could have just destroyed her and left her broken for the rest of her life and she somehow found a way to reclaim her life by helping others and sharing a story that can not possibly be easy to share.
I wish her much success and peace in life.
