Hannah Anderson makes first public appearance since rescue (VIDEO)
Hannah Anderson, the 16-year-old girl who was rescued Saturday after being kidnapped by longtime family friend James DiMaggio, made her first public appearance since her ordeal on Thursday afternoon.
Yesterday, Anderson attended a fundraiser for her family at a local restaurant in the Lakeside community of San Diego. The teen emerged from the car wearing sunglasses and offered no comment before entering the restaurant.
Anderson's father, Brett, later emerged and released the following statement:
"This is a small community that we are a part of. The community came together putting on this great fundraiser for Hannah... and this is how Lakeside rolls. So I just wanted to say how much we appreciate it from everybody, the community, family, friends for being here ... and local sheriffs and law enforcement."
Anderson also revealed he had already spoken with and thanked the horseback riders who had first spotted Hannah in Idaho and tipped off authorities. "It was a chance encounter, but it did save my daughter's life," Anderson said. "Other than that, Hannah sends her love. She's doing good day by day, and we'll just keep moving forward from here."
The statement comes just after search warrants confirmed that DiMaggio, who was killed in a shootout with police, tortured Anderson's mother and brother before killing them and setting his house on fire. The warrants also revealed that DiMaggio and Anderson had exchanged a number of phone calls before the murder and kidnapping occurred and that letters from Hannah (along with an incendiary device, a handcuff box and "arson wire") were all found in DiMaggio's home.
To be totally honest, I can't help but find this case a little fishy, especially as more details are being revealed. There are still many unanswered questions (including DiMaggio's motive) and both Brett and Hannah have had similarly eerie calm reactions to the entire ordeal now that it's over. The teen even felt comfortable talking to total strangers about it on social media! Still, I guess we might never know the full story.
Meanwhile, I am glad to see that the family is getting so much support not only from their loved ones, but also the entire community.
