Little boy sneaks out for Slurpees, is fatally struck by car while his sister watches
A 4-year-old boy was ran over by a car on a busy road in Michigan last weekend after he sneaked out of his gradmother's home in the middle of the night to get a Slurpee with his older sister. Everything might have been okay if only Steven Pelshaw's sister were a lot older than him. Sadly, she's only 5 and so, like him, she had no clue what she was doing.
Even so, she somehow managed to cross the 5-lane road without a scratch--little Steven was not as lucky. The driver who fatally hit him said she was distracted by the unlikely scene of the 5-year-old girl standing alone in the driveway of a 7-Eleven in the middle of the night. What the driver didn't know is that she was waiting for her 4-year-old brother whom she didn't realize existed until it was too late.
I can't think of something more horrifying! Can you imagine how the grandmother must have felt when she was told what happen? Poor abuelita! The children's mother had left the kids with their grandmother while she did some late-night shopping.
Little Steven was my own son's age and so this story hit close to home. While he has never tried to do anything like this, I wouldn't put it past him. When his elder sister figured out how to open the front door on her own, we put a sliding chain lock pretty high up so she couldn't reach it. But my son has already figured out all he needs to do is get a chair from the kitchen and slide it open.
Maybe I should listen to my husband and install an alarm system...
