Concerned parents lose custody of their baby for something any mom or dad would do!
A 5-month-old-baby has been unjustifiably separated from his parents in Sacramento, California. Police officers stormed into the home of Anna Nikolayev and her husband Alex and took their baby, Sammy, away. The ordeal started because the Nikolayevs took their child, who has a heart murmur, to Sutter Memorial Hospital to be treated for flu symptoms and they were not happy with the treatment he was getting and wanted a second opinion.
How is this cause for removal from the parents?
According to Anna, at one point a nurse came in to administer antibiotics to her child and when she questioned the nurse about what the antibiotics were for, the nurse said she had no idea. Later a doctor told Anna that Sammy didn't need antibiotics. Definitely not a confidence booster.
Sammy was later admitted to the pediatric ICU where doctors began discussing heart surgery. Anna argued with doctors about getting a second opinion. Without proper discharge, Anna took Sammy out of the Sutter Memorial Hospital to get a second opinion at Kaiser Permanente.
"The police showed up there. They saw that the baby was fine," Anna said. "They told us that Sutter was telling them so much bad stuff that they thought that this baby is dying on our arms."
Medical records from the doctor treating Sammy at Kaiser Permanente state that the baby was clinically safe to go home. "I do not have concern for the safety of the child at home with his parents," added the Kaiser doctor. Police were satisfied and let the family head home.
That should have been the end of the story--but no! The next day police show up at the Nikolayev home with Child Protective Services and take the child away. CPS has cited "severe neglect" as the reason for taking the child away.
Anna has been allowed to visit her baby for an hour since he was placed in protective custody at Sutter Memorial Hospital.
Are you kidding me with this? What parent wouldn't want a second opinion when they are uncomfortable with the health care their child is getting? What parent wouldn't want a second opinion about heart surgery for a 5-month-old regardless of the care the child is getting? You don't take heart surgery lightly!
As a parent you have to trust your gut. You are your child's advocate. Doesn't it say something that the parents didn't take the child out of Sutter Memorial Hospital and take him directly home? No, they took him to get a second opinion. These parents are obviously concerned with the health and well-being of their child.
