In the past week alone, there has been a multitude of sickening murder-suicides and now, another horrific tragedy has taken place. Yesterday, 23-year-old Denver mom Mayra Perez shot her three children, all under the age of seven, before turning the gun on herself.

Authorities responded to an emergency call at Perez's home Wednesday morning and found a gruesome scene. Perez shot her three young kids before committing suicide, killing two of her kids, 4-year-old Neveah Morales and 1-year-old Erick Perez, and leaving one, 2-year-old Isabel Perez, in critical condition.

The whole situation is just too horrendous to even begin to understand.

In a news conference at the Denver hospital where little Isabel remains in a coma, Perez's brother, Tony Nuñez, gave this statement:

"Being the brother of the person who caused this tragedy, I wish I could say or express in words a 'sorry.' But what's done is done. Whatever reason drove her to this, it's going to be in God's hands. He will be the judge of her."

For now, Nuñez said he's putting all of his focus on Isabel, who has to undergo surgery. The family has set up a Wells Fargo fund in the young girl's name to help cover the medical expenses.

Perez's actions are unforgivable and unjustifiable, but given that this is at least the fourth incident in which a parent has taken the life of their family along with their own, I can't help but wonder: What is it that has made these people decide the world is just too overwhelming to bear? And how could they ever take it out on their own children?

Perez's case in particular is especially heartbreaking to me, simply because she herself was so young. As a 23-year-old who has no kids and is just barely learning to navigate "the real world," I can't even imagine how difficult it must have been for someone her age to be a mother to THREE kids, all under the age of seven. I feel overwhelmed just thinking about it.

That's not say I could ever begin to understand her fatal decision. As I said, nothing will ever excuse her crimes or the heartbreak she has caused her family. I only hope that her loved ones are able to step in and take care of Isabel to make sure that she gets the physical and just as importantly, the emotional help that she needs and that her mother could not seem to find.
