It's been more than three days since crazed gunman Jimmy Lee Dykes killed a school bus driver, kidnapped a kindergartner, and went into hiding in an underground bunker in Alabama. Unfortunately, he's showing no signs of turning himself--or the little boy--over to the police, despite that the child has reportedly been crying for his parents.

What a nightmarish ordeal ... I can't even imagine how helpless and agonized that kid's mom and dad must feel.

Authorities have been communicating with Dykes using a 4-inch wide ventilation pipe leading to the bunker, trying desperately to talk the 65-year-old into freeing the 5-year-old boy. Though Dykes has allowed coloring books and medication for the boy (who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD), police haven't seemed to get any closer to capturing him or getting the terrified kindergartener out.

But the really scary part? There's really no way of knowing how long this could go on for! The shelter has electricity, food, and even a TV, which means Dykes could have plans of hiding out there--with the child--for a long period of time. In fact, according to the police chief, Dykes has been known to stay in the bunker for eight days!

The whole thing is just terrifying, particularly because there's no right way to proceed. Police have to be extremely careful as to what they do next because one wrong move and the boy's life could be put into further danger. Though authorities say the child has not been harmed, the fact that Dykes is holding him hostage obviously shows that he knows he has the upper hand and is using the boy as a bargaining chip. What kind of horrible person does that?

Ugh, that poor little kid! It breaks my heart to think of him alone, scared and crying for his parents, who must be sick with worry. I just pray that the cops figure out a way to reunite that child with his family, as quickly and as safely as possible.
