I was so saddened to read the news that a little newborn baby boy will never see again because of a father's negligence. New York City police have charged 26-year-old Recco Dudley with reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child after he told police that he had dropped little 6-week-old Royalty Dudley when he finished giving him a bath. The dad is currently being held on $50,000 bond after being charged on Thursday.

The injuries the baby sustained caused a skull fracture and internal bleeding, which caused the baby to permanently lose his sight. But it really gets worse, on many levels…

Inexperienced dad (I'm assuming) Dudley didn't take the baby to the hospital for THREE days after the accident, which occurred in early December, at which time doctors at the New York Presbyterian Hospital determined that the injuries, which also included three fractured ribs and retinal hemorrhaging, left the baby blind.

What makes this story even more heartbreaking for me is that I don't know what's true: Did the dad's possible inexperience play a role in this horrible turn of events for little Royalty? Is there something else more sinister going on, like abuse? Family members have spoken out in the dad's defense, saying he would never knowingly hurt his son, so we don't really know.

But whatever the case, the extent of the injuries to have been so serious, I'm sure the fall was not minor. I wish he would have acted right away. Heck, I freak out when my son so much as falls inside his Pack and Play, and that's all cushiony and my baby is 9 months old. I honestly don't know why this dad waited so long to get medical attention for his baby, which the New York Daily News reports was sought after the baby would not stop crying on the third day after his fall. In the end, I'm glad he finally did get the little guy to the hospital.

The baby is still at N.Y.C.'s New York-Presbyterian Columbia Medical Center, recuperating. My thoughts and prayers are with little Royalty, and I hope he makes a speedy recovery--and that the truth comes out in this awful case. I also hope this serves as a lesson to all us new parents: Be careful when bathing your baby and ALWAYS get tiny babies checked out if they hit their heads--or if anything is amiss--when they're this young!

Where was the mother at?

I think he should be charged for negligence after the fact. Three days is too long to wait to report the incidence. Inexperience is no excuse for that.
