Facebook "dead prank" is so not funny!
Okay, I'm just going to come right out and say it: I'm reeeaally over Facebook. What was once a fun and convenient way of connecting with friends is now just a tool for all sorts of bizarre activity. The latest horrifying trend? Using the site to pronounce a person dead!
That's right. Apparently, Facebook has a form that almost anyone can access and fill out to declare another person as deceased. Once the form is filled and submitted, the site creates a memorial page of the person who is presumed dead. But lately, some have been turning the online sheet into a cruel prank and using it on people who are still very much alive! Um, talk about a bad joke!

So why would anyone do such a thing? As Buzzfeed recently demonstrated, this prank seriously messes up a person's Facebook account and is actually really easy to pull off. As long as you can find an obituary for someone with the same name as whomever you want to torment, Facebook will accept it as proof that the person has really passed away. After the form is sent in, the "deceased" person's profile page is locked and replaced with a memorial page where people can post their condolences and tributes. To get back their account, the person at the butt of the joke then has to fill out a special request form and wait for an unspecified amount of time for a response.
Okay, I get that this is all supposed to be for the sole purpose of making one poor soul's Facebook life a huge annoyance. But to be honest, I just don't find it funny. In fact, it seems downright mean--not because these pranksters are locking someone out of their account, but because there are people out there who are utilizing this form for its real purpose and they're mocking it. Besides, pronouncing someone dead on a HUGE public forum (an online one, no less! Don't they know nothing on the Internet can ever really be erased?) is just inappropriate on so many levels.
