I never thought  I would ever be quoting anything President George W. Bush said, but thanks to Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) and his newest insane and racist bill, I have no choice--I feel compelled to quote the former Republican president:

"The diversity of America has always been a great strength of this country. Here you can be proud of your cultural heritage, proud of your ancestry, proud of your native language, and still be a proud American."

So let me begin this by saying, Rep. King, the fact that you have no shame in publicly declaring that "diversity has never been America's strong suit" makes me not only doubt your position in office, but also your sanity. Are you sure you're an American? Or is it that Iowa is completely blindfolded to the rest of your great country?

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, Rep. King just passed a new bill to make English the only and official U.S. language in the name of "unifying the nation."

He said during a press conference: "Our language is getting subdivided by some forces of the federal government. It is time to speak with a common voice." Then later he expanded that thought: "The argument that diversity is our strength has really never been backed up by logic. Its unity is where our strength is. Our Founding Fathers understood that."

So let me begin by telling Rep. King that his "Founding Fathers" didn't have a chance to look at the latest census. Did you look at the numbers by any chance Rep. King? As the modern-day multiculturalist that I am, it is my duty to remind you of the landscape provided by the latest Census results: 50.5 million Hispanics live in the United States (about 16 percent of the total population), an increase of more than 15 million from the 2000 census.

The evident growth of the Latino population in the last decade should tell you as a Republican politician that you must recalibrate your message, and stop criticizing Obama for acting accordingly and for advocating in favor of "minorities." The president needs to think of all of us if he wants to win the upcoming election and stay in office, period. Perhaps you are forgetting that Hispanic voters could make the difference not only in the upcoming elections, but for many years to come.

Racism continues to be the wedge conservatives like Mr. King use to distract Americans from real questions, that need real answers and God knows his "culture wars" are not helping his fellow Republicans win any nods. So, Rep. King if you want to build a fortress policy in the USA, let me just say this, you're out of time. Minorities are here to stay. Multiculturalism is here to stay. Latinos are here to stay. You have to accept that, period.

Even if both legal and illegal immigration of Hispanics were to come to a complete halt, the Latino population would continue to grow and grow. And guess what else Mr. King? We talk Spanish and we talk English too. Perhaps you should take lessons and learn a thing or two about Rep. John Conyers who recently delivered a speech giving his opening remarks entirely in Spanish, to make the point that this country--this great United States of America--has always been a multilingual one. And it will certainly continue to be.

What do you think of Rep. King's racist bill? Do you think we should have an English-only nation?
