Stopping the deportation of our young children was the right thing for President Obama to do
WOW! I really have to say it's been a while since a politician has done something--anything--that has made me really proud to be an American. I can now safely say that President Obama just did.
In a shocking move, the White House has declared that they would stop deporting undocumented children using prosecutorial discretion. Basically, he just isn't going to enforce the immigration law when it comes to these kids if they meet certain critieria. Doing so, he essentially worked around Congress, who have been determined to block every attempt at passing the DREAM Act and paths to citizenship for these kids.
To qualify for immunity from deportation under the new policy, undocumented residents must be under the age of thirty and:
- Have been brought to the United States before they turned 16
- Have been in the country for at least five continuous years
- Have no criminal history
- Have graduated from a U.S. high school, earned a GED, or served in the military
They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed. They are not becoming citizens but they will no longer be criminals either.
Sound familiar? That's because this is essentially the DREAM act that immigration activist have been pushing so hard for years. I'm shocked that President Obama decided to act so decisively on such a politically charged issue, but most of all I'm proud. I mean, there is really no logical way to argue that children deserve to pay for the mistakes made by their parents. Not to mention the fact that so many of our nation's brightest and best are suffering from the inability to attend college and follow their dreams because of their immigration status.
This was a smart move by President Obama not just because it will most certainly galvanize the Latino vote around our current Commander-in-Chief but because, quite frankly, it was the right thing to do.
Now all he needs to do is find a way around all these pesky Republicans to provide a path to citizenship for all of these young Latinos citizens, because whether or not folks want to agree--we ARE the future of the United States of America.
What do you think about Obama making our DREAM come true?
