Yesterday, justice was finally served when George Zimmerman, the Latino man who shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder.

Special prosecutor Angela Corey announced the decision after weeks of public outcry against Zimmerman, who claims he killed Martin in self-defense. Now, the gunman is expected to plead not guilty citing Florida's "stand your ground law" in court later today. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The news brought joy to Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, who told CBS that they were now "at ease." "We are, you know, overwhelmed that he was arrested because this is what we've been fighting for for 44 days," said Fulton.

Fulton also told the TODAY show that she believes the shooting was an accident that "just got out of control." But though she is sympathetic towards Zimmerman's loved ones, she expresses relief that the man responsible for her son's death is finally being punished.

"I understand his family is hurting, but think about our family that lost our teenage son.  I mean, it's just very difficult to live with day in and day out," she said. " I'm sure his parents can pick up the phone and call him, but we can't pick up the phone and call Trayvon anymore."

And Trayvon's parents weren't the only ones with happy reactions to the news! Celebrities took to Twitter to share their thoughts as well. Here's what they said:

Taraji P. Henson ‏(@TherealTaraji): "RT @veahismyname:: I remember @TherealTaraji tweeted "1 day she'd wake up to breaking news! George Zimmerman arrested". Today is the day!"

Russell Simmons ‏(@UncleRUSH) "very proud of the work @GlobalGrind has done seeking justice for Trayvon! Zimmerman to be charged…" [referring to his website]

Tichina Arnold ‏ (@TichinaArnold) "God is a GOOD & MERCIFUL God. I'm reading that George Zimmerman will be brought 2 justice. Now let's pray that God has mercy on HIM."

Mike Bloomberg ‏(@MikeBloomberg) "Shoot First laws have nothing to do w/ the 2nd Amendment. They invite vigilante justice w/ disastrous results... #Trayvon"

MC Hammer (@MCHammer) "The World must be put on notice that the value of the Lives of our children is as precious and worthy as that of any child on Earth #Trayvon"

Wu Tang's Ghostface Killah simply wrote in Arabic: "ALHAMDULILAH" while Niecy Nash wrote: "Finally!!!!!"

Other celebrities, including P.Diddy and Jadakiss also retweeted news stories sharing the news of Zimmerman's charges. Personally, I'm right there with them - I wanted to shout with joy and relief after first hearing the news!

What was your reaction to the news of the charges against Zimmerman? Do you agree or disagree with them?

wild....

I was not surprised that he was charged. I was only a matter of time before the prosecutors gave in to the public's pressure. I think that the FL prosecutors over-charged him just like they did with Casey Anthony and for that, I think he'll either be acquitted or give a much lesser sentence.

People are making a much bigger deal about this case than they should. A child died, it's unfortunate. But there is that reasonable doubt and Mr. Zimmerman could have truly been acting in self-defense. I'm not sure, neither are you. We weren't there. I really hope that justice is served to the right people, even if it is the shooter.

I cannot believe loosing a child and killed by someone. Not  knowing what really happened must be terrible. My prayers go to his family especially mom and dad.

However, there is another family grieving for a son, husband and father that also need prayers. Let me not forget that.

God will provide justice for whoever deserve it.

let's pray for zimmerman, he was just doing his job, ask yourself what you would do in that situation? You would shoot! multiple times.
happy...

all that attention for a black person . i have heard of wosrt crimes done to hispanics and they dont get as much attention as this one did

sure , is unfortunate that that kid died but the guy acted based on self defense like any other person would have . ppl are just focusing on the skin color of the teenager not on the whole situation
