Women have lower levels of the hormone than men, so for the high protein-low carbs diet to work for us we have to tweak it.

First of all we have to add fiber to our plate because fiber is what makes us feel full and satisfied. It will prevent us from snacking later! Second, we have to replace the simple carbs such as salads and fruits with more complex ones including pasta and whole grains. Think of it like a savings plan, you'll eat a little more food now so you don't have to eat the rest of the night. A research conducted by nutritionist and author Olga Raz, found that our levels of serotonin decline when we eat simple carbs and the only thing that raise them are complex ones.

We must have a serving of wild or brown rice, whole wheat pasta or grains with a meal per day in order to raise our serotonin levels and absorb proteins. Remember that to generate weight loss we have to eat, but we have to eat smart. A high protein meal will only satisfy you for a few hours and before you know it, you'll be craving high calorie foods. We want to eat well, so we can eat less throughout the day. Low serotonin levels are what makes us hungry and crave food.

Some nutritionists believe that when Dr. Robert Atkins wrote his book 40 years ago, he had a male in mind. Honestly, it all makes sense. Men need more protein than us because they have more muscle. Their bodies crave protein to develop even more muscle mass. So, next time you are cooking for your husband make sure to eat a couple slices of whole wheat bread with your meal. Believe me; he'll be jealous that you can enjoy a toasted delicious slice with some olive oil!
