Latina gives up soda; loses 5 pounds and saves $420!

Soda is pretty bad for you. I know this; you know this. In fact, the New York City Board of Health has just approved a ban on sales of large sodas and other sugary drinks in restaurants.

Although I've written about it plenty but, I admit, it's still hard to give up my daily sugar fix. Even though I try to drink diet soda whenever possible, there's countless health risks associated with both the diet and non-diet varieties.

Did I mention weight loss? That's exactly what Claudia Torres experienced after giving up soda for 2 months as part of The New York Post's challenge to give up soda and see what happens. Well, she's now declaring: "I gave up soda and now I'm skinny!" PLUS she's a little richer, too.

Claudia, a 26-year-old medical assistant in Queens, New York, said that she loved all types of soda before taking on the challenge. It wasn't easy, either, as she struggled with things like "eating popcorn at the movies with a bottle of water killed me". Then she realized that not getting a sugar crash in the afternoon made her feel better, plus "my stomach looks and feels less bloated." She recounts her reaction at losing the weight to The New York Post:

I'm amazed that I lost as much as 5 pounds, because skipping soda and replacing it with diet Vitamin Water is the only thing I've done. I'm sure I've been eating more unhealthy stuff. I'm going to have the occasional Coke now that the challenge is over, but there's no way I'm going back to my bad habits.

I'm pretty astounded that not only did she lose 5 pounds without changing her diet (and, as she admits, probably eating more unhealthy things throughout the 2 months) but she ALSO saved $420 in the process! If that's what giving up soda can do (losing 30 pounds in a year without much effort and saving $2,520 that same year), then I think this is something we should all seriously consider. I know that I'm definitely putting it at the top of my list!
