What we need to learn from this abuela on World Health Day

Who is that hot abuela burning up the floor in this year's World Health Day poster? It's 69-year-old Cubana Mirtha Nordet, teaching her teenage grandson Damian how to salsa. She says:

I want my grandchildren to learn as much as possible about the culture and traditions of my home country Cuba.

Nordet is the embodiment of what the World Health Organization is trying to help me, and all of us, do--get older in a healthier way.

Today is World Health Day and the theme is ageing and health. The campaign's slogan is "good health adds life to years" and they want to emphasize activities that "focus on how good health throughout life can help older men and women lead full and productive lives and be a resource for their families and communities."

So what are they teaching us about healthier aging, exactly?

With estimates saying that two billion people will be older than 60 by 2050, it's more important than ever to take care of older people. Some of WHO's activities are focused on raising awareness about fighting age stereotypes, prevention of disease and long-term care.

As our parents and we ourselves get older, World Health Day emphasizes the importance of keeping a healthy lifestyle. And that it's not too late, as proven by Nordet.

So what can you personally do in honor of World Health Day? Take a look at your parents diet and see where you can make some improvements. Are they eating healthy and exercising? Are they taking care of their teeth and going to doctors' appointments regularly? Make sure you participate in a World Health Day event, even if it is just doing the younger kids to salsa. Every little bit helps.
