Weight loss surgery can cure diabetes…within hours!

When I got my gastric bypass done in 2009, I wasn't dealing with diabetes. I was one of the lucky ones, I guess. Most people who are morbidly obese or even overweight, in particular Latinos, have diabetes along with all the complications it brings.

At the time, though, my doctor told me that I would never likely have to deal with diabetes, something which I had heard from another friend who underwent weight loss surgery. Now there's real evidence showing that we weren't the only ones.

A new study reveals that obesity surgery can reverse the signs of diabetes, sometimes even within a few hours.

In the study that was presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology, authors said that patients who had stomach-reducing surgery saw their blood sugar levels drop to normal levels. USA Today reports the findings:

Some patients who had the operations, called bariatric surgery, improved so rapidly that they went off their diabetes medications before leaving the hospital, says lead investigator Philip Schauer, a professor of surgery and director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.

I'm not really surprised about these findings, thanks to my own experience, but I'm really glad to see this study prove what I already knew. Although weight loss surgery shouldn't be a cure for your diabetes, it's nice to know that, should you decide to do it because you are morbidly obese and can't lose weight any o ther way, it will help get rid of your diabetes as well as your excess. weight.

Have you ever had weight loss surgery? How do you deal with diabetes or pre-diabetes?
