Coffee lovers rejoice! Bean extract linked to weight loss

I'm not a coffee lover. In fact, I tend to actually avoid coffee most of the time. I know it's kind of betraying my Cuban roots to say that I've never had more than a sip of café cubano (don't yell at me, abuela) but the taste of coffee has always been too bitter for me.

I love my caffeine though, often having tea or even soda on occasion and occasionally having a café mocha since the chocolate helps me enjoy the usual bitterness of coffee. But when I read that coffee bean extract has been linked to weight loss, I ran straight to the coffee pot. Can this really be the miracle way to lose weight?

A new study has just come out with the news that taking green coffee bean extract, which is sold as a supplement, could be a safe and effective way to get rid of excess weight. ABC News reports that Joe Vinson, study author and a chemist at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, said:

Based on our results, taking multiple capsules of green coffee extract a day--while eating a low fat, healthful diet and exercising regularly--appears to be a safe, effective, inexpensive way to lose weight.

But don't get too excited just yet. Research is unclear as to why coffee bean extract actually helps you drop the pounds and registered dietician Keith Ayoob, an associate professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, theorizes that the study may not be telling the whole story:

 I'd be happier if the research included pure caffeine, in the same amount as is contained in the two doses of [green coffee bean extract]. Then you'd know if the effects are due solely to caffeine or to something else in the beans, or to some combination thereof.

So will you rush out to buy some coffee bean extract? I'm not sure I would. Although the findings are exciting, they have raised more questions than answers. I'm going to hold off until they find out more information. But in the meantime, I might start actually having coffee sometimes.
