Jennifer Lopez's high school boyfriend, David Cruz, dies at age 51

David Cruz, who was Jennifer Lopez's high school boyfriend, has died. He was 51. According to TMZ, David died on Saturday, March 21, from heart disease. The New York Daily News reported that his official cause of death was listed as hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

The NYC Medical Examiner's Office revealed that he passed away at Mount Sinai West Hospital in Manhattan, New York, and his partner of 18 years, Isa, shared a statement with TMZ about her loss. J.Lo has yet to comment on his passing, but she previously revealed he considered him "a friend."

David's partner of 18 years, Isa, shared a statement about him with TMZ and said how loving he was. "He was kind and loving. He never held on to anything and was always very open. He was a devoted father, he helped raise his step-son who is now in the Marines," she wrote. "He loved the Yankees and Knicks. He loved going to the theatre with me. My favorite moment was family date night, because it wasn't just special for me but for the kids as well. He always made sure to end things with an 'I love you.'"

Jennifer reportedly started dating David back in high school in the mid-1980s, when she was 15 years old. He is just a year older than she is, and the pair dated for a decade before going their separate ways in the mid-1990s. The former couple attended the movie Money Train premiere together in Los Angeles, California, in November 1995, before J.Lo became a household name in Hollywood.

The superstar has yet to make a comment on the death of her ex-boyfriend. Throughout her career, J.Lo has rarely spoken ill of any of her exes and even referred to David as "a friend" in an interview from 2004. "He's a friend, and he probably knows me better than anyone else," she said at the time. 

The date of his passing, Jen remembered another important person from her past.

David died on Saturday, March 21, which also happened to be the 23rd anniversary of the Selena biopic that J.Lo starred in at the beginning of her career. The movie was released two years after the tragic passing of singer Selena Quintanilla, and J.Lo shared a post on Instagram to celebrate the late singer's legacy on the anniversary of the movie's release date. It hasn't been reported if David has any children of his own and he doesn't appear to be on social media. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.
