Jennifer Lopez celebrates Selena Quintanilla's life & legacy 25 years after her tragic death

It has been 25 years since Selena Quintanilla's untimely death--and 23 years since her biopic Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez, hit theaters. The movie was released on March 21, 1997, and to commemorate the special date, J.Lo created a touching tribute to honor the life of the Tejano singer as well as reflect on how much the role impacted her life.

J.Lo said Selena had a lasting impact on her life after Jen played her in the movie, and she said starring in the film inspired her to get her singing career started. It's hard to believe that so much time has passed since the singer's tragic death, but Jen's video perfectly captures why her legacy will live on forever.

Jennifer's tribute was so emotional.

The singer shared a three-minute-long video honoring Selena and looking back at how much landing the role in the movie changed her life. "Join me today in #CelebratingSelena. 🌹✨ I can’t believe it’s been 23 years since this incredible movie came out and 25 years since her passing," Jennifer captioned the video on Saturday, March 21. "Selena was such an inspiration to me and I was so lucky to be chosen to play her. As an artist, this movie truly was an experience I’m going to remember for the rest of my life. J.Lo has made it a point to pay homage throughout her career.

A lot of fans credit the movie for being the reason why J.Lo is famous, and she made it clear that she acknowledges how the role catapulted her into stardom. She has made it a point to honor Selena in various ways by performing her songs at different stages of her career.

She performed one of Selena's hits at a recent concert.

During her recent It's My Party tour in 2019, J.Lo surprised fans with a rendition of "Si Una Vez." During one of her concert stops on the tour, she performed at the AT&T Center arena in San Antonio, Texas, and gave the fans quite a show.

J.Lo was deeply inspired by Selena.

She has been asked about Selena and her legacy throughout her career, and Jen has been open about how much the movie changed her life. J.Lo, who started her career as a dancer and actress, went on to release her debut album On the 6 in 1999, and she says it was Selena's passion for music that inspired her to do so.

J.Lo performed a musical tribute to Selena while performing alongside Los Dinos onstage at the Billboard Latin Music Awards at BankUnited Center in April 2015 in Miami, Florida. She performed with Selena's siblings, Suzette and A.B. Quintanilla.
