The time has come for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to say goodbye to their lives as senior members of the royal family. The couple bid adieu to their roles and responsibilities on Monday, March 9, as they made their final appearance at the Commonwealth Day service in London, England. They are back in the United Kingdom to attend their last royal engagements before they officially step down on March 31.

This event also marked the first time the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been seen in public with Prince William and Kate Middleton since Harry and Meghan announced that they would be stepping back from their royal duties. The last time the two couples were seen together was when they all attended Remembrance Day events in November 2019. It was reported that there was tension between the brothers because of Harry's decision to move to Canada, and footage from the service shows that William barely acknowledged his little brother and sister-in-law.

Harry looked solemn as he walked in hand in hand with his wife, while she looked up and waved at the crowd with a smile. We can't imagine what he's feeling as he walks away from his family and his life as a royal to start over somewhere new.

Prince William happily engaged with Prince Edward while Harry and Meghan looked on. Kate seemed to not even look in their direction. The foursome used to be so close at one point, but there's no need to be a body language expert to see that there is some sort of tension between them.

Commonwealth Day is held annually on the second Monday of March as a way to commemorate the Commonwealth of Nations, which is a union of some countries that used to be part of the British Empire. The family gathers for a church service together, and it's usually a day of celebration.

Prince Harry didn't look pleased.

He is usually a bit brighter and calmer, but the royal looked flustered and almost sad during the service. He has been vocal about his feelings toward the way the public, the press, and his family have handled his relationship with Meghan, and that is the reason why they are stepping away from their roles. Still, it must be daunting to leave the only life you have ever known behind because you have to protect your new family.

At Commonwealth Day 2019, both couples seemed to be more united than they appeared this year. The brothers shared some conversations as well as smiles together, and they all stood side by side at the event. It has been reported for some time now that there was a distancing between the brothers, who had been pretty inseparable for most of their lives. As William eyes the throne to one day be king, his little brother is now raising his son, Archie, with his wife in North America. “They are on different paths now,” a source previously told People magazine. “It’s just the reality of the situation.”

The final goodbye.

This was the couple's final appearance as senior royal members, and it served as a goodbye for them as they build a new life together across the Atlantic. The pair stepped out from their last official event as royals and greeted some fans before being quickly whisked away in their car.
