Selena Gomez might be taking some time away from the limelight, but that doesn't mean she hasn't been busy working. The singer has been hard at work on a new docuseries called Living Undocumented, which has been given a green light by Netflix.

The Mexican-American actress will be serving as executive producer on the series, and she has teamed up with Emmy-winning producers Aaron Saidman and Eli Holzman, Deadline reported on Tuesday, September 17. The powerful show will focus on eight undocumented families who bravely allowed cameras to document their and their families' lives as they faced potential deportation.

Selena wanted to get involved to shed light on the scary issues people are dealing with.

“I chose to produce this series, Living Undocumented, because over the past few years, the word immigrant has seemingly become a negative word,” she told Deadline, which was first to report the news. “My hope is that the series can shed light on what it’s like to live in this country as an undocumented immigrant firsthand, from the courageous people who have chosen to share their stories.”

She shared the trailer with fans on Instagram along with a meaningful message.

Selena seemed to be moved by the project and shared her hopes that her fans will also feel the same. "I am so humbled to be a part of Netflix’s documentary series Living Undocumented. The immigration issue is more complex than one administration, one law or the story you hear about on the news," she captioned the post. "These are real people in your community, your neighbors, your friends -- they are all part of the country we call home. I can’t wait for you guys to see this and hope it impacts you like it impacted me."

While her fans expressed how proud they were of her, not everyone was happy with the news.

Selena's fans were proud that she is using her platform to raise awareness on an issue that is affecting so many people. "Selena Gomez be out there making shows on Netflix which [expletive] matter and try to send a very important message and spread awareness," one fan wrote.

Others, on the other hand, are seeing this project as a way to exploit people's suffering. "People want to claim their communities issues when those issues become monetary gain," a Twitter user wrote. "Selena Gomez gets to make this one documentary and pretend to do any work for the undocumented community. She gets to make these people relive trauma and walk away with a Netflix check."

The full trailer is so heart-wrenching.

Living Undocumented is designed to illuminate one of the most important issues of our time," producer Aaron Saidman told Deadline. "But rather than discussing this issue with only statistics and policy debates, we wanted viewers to hear directly from the immigrants themselves, in their own words, with all the power and emotion that these stories reflect.”

Selena has a lot of younger fans, so for her to support this project and expose them to the reality of what so many people are dealing with can help spread awareness and move people to make a change. The docuseries will be available to stream on Netflix globally on Wednesday, October 2.
