The actress shared a statement about her excitement to be part of the film.
“I’ve been forever fascinated by the story of Griselda Blanco and jumped at the chance to play her on screen,” Jennifer told Deadline about joining the project. “She is all things we look for in storytelling and dynamic characters--notorious, ambitious, conniving, chilling. In a genre dominated by legendary kingpins, I’m eager to shine a spotlight on this anti-hero and excited to partner with STX for the third time so we can bring this compelling, complicated story to life.”
Jen is teaming up with the production company again.
“We love working with Jennifer, Elaine and Benny. They are extraordinary producers and we value their partnership and trust," STX Entertainment chairman Adam Fogelson told the publication. "This is an epic true crime story that Jennifer is passionate about telling and we can’t wait to begin production on The Godmother with her and her team.”
J.Lo has been tied to the project for quite some time.
Jen's involvement with the Griselda-inspired film was originally announced in 2016 and was set to be a project that would air on HBO. Now it has moved to STX and will be hitting theaters. Sources told Deadline that this might also be Jen's debut as director, but that has yet to be confirmed.
Griselda was the mother of four kids.
She had four sons: Michael Corleone Blanco, Dixon Trujillo, Uber Trujillo, and Osvaldo Trujillo. She was married three times. Her second husband, Alberto Bravo, died in a gunfight with Griselda. Her third husband, Darío Sepúlveda, the father of Michael Corleone Blanco, was killed by gunmen in Medellin.
Her life came to an end when she returned to Colombia.
La Abuela de la Cocaína, as she has also called, was eventually caught and spent almost 20 years in jail in the United States. She was deported back to Colombia in 2004. She was assassinated in her hometown of Medellin in 2012. She was reportedly estimated to be worth $2 billion at the time of her death.
There have been other projects about her life.
Cocaine Cowboys was released in 2006, followed by Cocaine Cowboys 2 in 2008. Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones starred as Griselda in the Lifetime movie Cocaine Godmother. There was also a play titled Confessions of a Cocaine Cowboy starring Zilah Mendoza.
