Yalitza has been displaying nothing but grace and humility during this journey.
The actress has been making the most of this wild ride and has kept her family close. She even brought her mom along for the Oscars on Sunday, February 24, and when interviewed by Entertainment Tonight, Yalitza's mom referred to her daughter's experience as an "unforgettable dream."
Though Yalitza wasn't a winner, Alfonso Cuarón took home some awards.
Both Yalitza and Marina de Tavira, who was nominated for best supporting actress, lost in their categories, but the film didn't go home empty-handed. The director won in the Foreign Language Film category and in the Cinematography category. When he went up to receive his awards, Alfonso embraced Yalitza and thanked her during his speech for her major contribution to his story.
Yalitza had no previous experience before her role in "Roma."
In fact, she is a teacher back home! She has been asked this question a lot during the press run, and her lack of training and experience in the acting field has led some people in the industry to doubt her ability and say she isn't deserving of the academy's recognition because she's not a "real actress."
Actor Sergio Goyri was captured on video saying some racist and hurtful remarks about Yalitza.
The actor was in disbelief about Yalitza's Oscar nomination while having a conversation at dinner, and his girlfriend unwittingly caught it all on video and shared it on social media. In the clip, Sergio was heard saying racist and derogatory remarks about Yalitza.
Unfortunately, Yalitza has had to deal with all this hate during such a beautiful moment.
Having this kind of success and recognition after your first role is so major, especially because Yalitza represents millions of indigenous women who don't often feel represented in the media. Not only that, but her character shows a side of domestic workers we don't usually see, and it brings attention to how much they impact people's lives. It's sad that Yalitza's own people felt threatened by her success instead of helping to uplift her and praise her the way she deserves. The way she has handled this, always having a smile on her face, shows us that her career and her path to success are just starting. And those haters are going to have to continue watching her on her journey from afar.
