Some Grammy viewers felt another performer would've been more qualified to do the Motown tribute, mostly because they believed a black female artist should've performed the songs which were originally recorded by black artists. Some came to her defense. “Motown was music for everybody. Everybody," Smokey Robinson, who performed with J.Lo told Variety regarding the criticism. "Who’s stupid enough to protest Jennifer Lopez doing anything for Motown?”

The singer, who has been known for making political statements with her outfits at the Grammys in past years, wore a "Build the Wall" dress this year and paired it with a "Make America Great Again" purse. She defended her outfit choice by saying her family migrated to the United States legally. "*illegal =/= immigrants. My family on my dad’s Italian & Latino side proudly immigrated legally into America, learned English, owned businesses, got their citizenship & loved their newfound home," she tweeted on Sunday. "Black family all legal. I support legal black & brown citizens over aliens. Period."

It seems like not everyone was happy with Cardi's best rap album win. Soon after the award was announced, Ariana sent out a slew of mean tweets, which she later clarified was about her late ex, Mac Miller, losing the award and not against Cardi. She said the Recording Academy invited his family to the event, and they were under the impression he would win. Mac died in 2018.
