There is no question that Selena Quintanilla is a legend who still has the power to move mountains. Even though her life was cut short when she was tragically murdered over 23 years ago, her fans and family continue to protect her legacy by tooth and nail to this day. The proof can be seen in the recent television projects involving Selena which have been met with fierce opposition. María Celeste Arrarás and Selena's widower Chris Perez can both attest to the difficulties of trying to get a show related to the star on the small screen, but it looks like Netflix has finally cracked the code to success.

The company just announced that it has ordered a scripted series based on the Queen of Tejano's life. It looks like this project will be received with open arms by Selena's fans because her family is involved, and we are hyped!

Netflix announced that 'Selena: The Series' is coming to its streaming service.

According to Netflix’s press release, the show will be "a coming of age story following Selena as her dreams come true and all the heart-wrenching and life-changing choices she and her family have to make as they navigate success, family, and music."

Members of Selena’s family will be part of the production team.

Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, and her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., are executive producers.

"Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” Suzette said.

"With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come," she added in her statement.

The president of the production company behind the series highlighted Selena’s impact on the Mexican American community.

"Selena and the entire Quintanilla family are an inspiration to many and especially to me, a millennial of the same heritage," Jaime Dávila, President of Campanario Entertainment, said in a statement. "Selena’s career achievements are legendary, but our scripted series will focus on the incredible story of a Mexican American family and how an extraordinary young woman transcended categories and borders to become a global star. I can’t imagine a better partner than Netflix to celebrate Selena and her family's lives."

Netflix and the series' team have some HUGE shoes to fill.

The Selena movie starring Jennifer Lopez that was released in 1997 was perfection. It will be a tough act to follow.

Fans are definitely excited about the show's potential.

It is an opportunity to share details about Selena’s life that weren’t covered in the film.

It is unknown if Selena’s widower will have any involvement in the project.

Chris was in court as recently as this month trying to get his own series, which is based on his love story with Selena, off of the ground. Abraham sued Chris in December 2016 in order to stop his efforts. Abraham claims that Chris is not authorized to create a show since he signed over his rights to Selena’s story after her death. Chris is trying to get Abraham’s lawsuit thrown out on the grounds of freedom of speech and that he signed away his rights under duress. Chris has been unsuccessful so far since the courts have been siding Abraham.

Fans of the couple are already voicing concerns about Chris potentially being left out of the project on his social media pages.

Only time will tell if he will have any say in what is covered in the series.
