She was married prior to dating Prince Harry. 1
Meghan married actor Trevor Engelson in 2011, but the pair divorced in 2013. After her engagement to Prince Harry was announced, some royal family fans were upset to find out that the royal was marrying a divorcée.
Meghan is older than Harry. 2
The former actress was born in 1981, while her now-husband was born in 1984. Age is nothing but a number when it comes to love, but it is a bit unusual for a royal pair.
Meghan appeared on the cover of 'Vanity Fair' and spoke about her relationship with Harry. 3
In an unusual move for someone dating a royal, the Suits star sat down with Vanity Fair for a profile which was featured on the October 2017 issue of the magazine.
She was the victim of racist remarks from the public and the media. 5
In November 2016, The Daily Star Online, for instance, wrote that Harry “could marry into gangster royalty--his new love is from a crime ridden Los Angeles neighborhood.”
Prince Harry released a statement asking the press and the public to be kinder to his then-girlfriend. 6
In November 2016, the royal forced to issue a statement to ask the people of England to ease up on their extensive and often negative media coverage of his girl and their relationship, and asking them to respect their privacy. "His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public--the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments," the unusual statement read. "Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game’. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game--it is her life and his."
Some British people didn't react well to her being biracial. 7
Meghan's mother is African American and her dad is white, which caused some controversy and she received some negative and often racist comments from the people of England. So terrible. She was the first American (and divorcée) to become a part of the royal family through marriage in almost 81 years. The last time was Wallis Simpson who married King Edward VIII, forcing him to renounce the throne.
Some believed that she wasn't even well received within the royal family due to her race. 8
When Princess Michael of Kent arrived to Queen Elizabeth II's annual Christmas luncheon in December 2017, many noticed the racially offensive "blackamoor" brooch that she was wearing. Blackamoor jewelry is known to fetishize and use of images of slavery for their pieces. "Ummm, did anyone else clock this? Notorious racist princess Michael of Kent wearing a Moor broach while attending lunch with Meghan Markle," one Twitter user commented at the time. The luncheon was to be the first time the royal was meeting Meghan so whether or not it was intentional, it definitely was in poor taste.
Meghan broke a little royal protocol for her engagement shoot. 9
After getting engaged in November 2017, the couple released the official portrait photograph to mark their engagement in December. The dress she's wearing for the shoot was a bit too sheer, which is not part of the royal dress code.
Meghan shocked everyone with her wedding dress. 11
And not for a good reason. The Duchess raised some eyebrows when she chose a boatneck neckline as her wedding gown, giving the world a look at her collarbone, which somewhat violates the royal family dress code because of the showing of too much skin. Yikes!
Her dad, Thomas Markle, did not walk her down the aisle. 12
Her dad reportedly suffered a heart attack just weeks prior to the royal wedding in May 2018. He was not able to fly to England to be by his daughter's side as she walked down the aisle to marry Harry. Everyone knows the real reason Mr. Markle wasn't there: The crazy paparazzi picture scandal where he was paid to "pose" for candid pics that were then sold at very high prices.
Meghan almost walked down the aisle by herself. 13
It would have been a historic moment in the royal family if the actress walked all the way down the aisle by herself. Some figured that her mother, Doria Ragland, would be the one to walk by her side after her father couldn't attend. Instead, her father-in-law, Prince Charles, met her half way and walked with her.
Her dad continued going to the press with interviews about his daughter. 14
He claimed that his daughter was not happy with the royal family's rules and said she was under too much "pressure" as Harry's wife.
Her half-sister, Samantha Markle, gave an extensive and explosive interview about their relationship. 15
Her sister did several interviews about her famous sister about their broken relationship, and even alleged that the actress has no relationship with her father's side of the family and that the duchess doesn't help their dad financially.
Meghan's assistant suddenly quit in November 2018. 16
Her personal assistant, Melissa, reportedly quit. "It's a real shock, why would she want to leave such a prestigious job so soon?" a source allegedly told The Daily Mail. "Melissa is a hugely talented person." Since the pair got married, three of their close aides have either left their positions or have been transfered elsewhere within the Palace.
