The trailer for 'El Secreto de Selena' TV show is here & it is chilling

el secreto de Selena trailer

The upcoming Telemundo TV series El Secreto de Selena, based on journalist María Celeste Arrarás' controversial book which covers Selena Quintanilla's final months alive, is almost here. The official trailer has hit the internet and it will take fans on an emotional roller coaster.

More from MamásLatinas: Actress Maya Zapata has a surprising connection to her new 'El Secreto de Selena' role

The murder of the Queen of Tejano at the hands of Yolanda Saldivar is still a very touchy subject for her fierce supporters who continue to hold her near and dear to their hearts. Many have completely rejected María Celeste's project, especially after a disturbing trailer was leaked last year. However, the difference between that clip and the new video is like night and day.

The trailer opens up to the sounds of sirens and law enforcement arriving at a crime scene.

We already know the tragedy at hand.

It cuts to the voice of a news reporter confirming that Selena has been shot.

That is when we got the first glimpse of Sofía Lama, the actress playing María Celeste, who is a character in the series.

The journalist seemed to preempt further criticism of her project in the clip. Sofía says she has already heard the version of events from the accusers and it is her job as a journalist to hear Yolanda’s side of the story.

A presumably dead Selena is then shown being evaluated by a doctor.

This is so sad.

Next you see a woman running with a gun who could be none other than Yolanda.

It cuts to actress Damayanti Quintanar, who took on the role of Yolanda, speaking in her prison jumpsuit and it was chilling. Even María Celeste admitted on Al Rojo Vivo that Damayanti’s performance was so real it gave her goosebumps.

That is when we get our first glimpse of Selena talking, who is played by actress Maya Zapata.

She is speaking highly of Yolanda, sending love to her fans, and is shown performing in her iconic purple jumpsuit.

We then see her father Abraham Quintanilla delivering the tragic news of Selena’s death.

This will be a hard pill to swallow for hardcore fans.

We also see the camera crew filming a scene which might be even more difficult to watch.

A hopeful Selena and Yolanda are shown talking in a parking lot while wearing matching outfits and then hop in a car together.

The video ends with María Celeste pressuring Yolanda to stop holding back information.

What Yolanda ultimately reveals is what made El Secreto de Selena so controversial. Fans and Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, believe the book is based on lies Yolanda told María Celeste, which include the implication that Selena was having an affair. The journalist has denied those claims, saying that the book is based on the full investigation surrounding the entertainer’s death.

Although the mood of the trailer was very eerie, it feels a lot lighter in comparison to the original leak.

The graphic teaser, which showed a bloody Selena, sent angry fans over the edge. They attacked Maria Celeste and promised to boycott the show if it ever saw the light of day.

Despite their complaints, the show is clearly still happening. Hopefully the backlash showed producers that they need to handle this story with great care.

María Celeste said that 'El Secreto de Selena' would treat the star’s memory with respect.

"It is a series that honors Selena’s memory. It was made with great care, with a lot of respect," she said on Al Rojo Vivo. Only time will tell if the audience will buy that.
