Melania Knauss met Donald Trump at a Fashion Week party back in 1998. 1
She was 28 at the time and a model. Trump was 52. "He wanted my number, but he was with a date, so of course I didn't give it to him," Melania told Harper’s Bazaar.
Instead, Donald gave his future wife all of his phone numbers and requested that she call him. 2
"The office, Mar-a-Lago, home in New York, everything," she told the magazine about the phone number exchange. Melania called him a few days later. She added that she was “struck by his energy.”
Their first date was in a celeb-friendly Manhattan restaurant called Moomba. 3
The Greenwich Village restaurant was a hot spot for the stars in the late 1990s. "It was a great place, wasn't it? I remember that night like it was two months ago," she told Harper's Bazaar.
Stern made sure to press Melania's buttons and she didn't seem to mind at all. 5
"Are you naked? Are you nude?" Stern asked. Melania laughed and replied, "Almost."
The model quickly learned that Trump wasn't exactly a one woman man. 6
When they first met, Trump was already separated from his second wife, Marla Maples. Some friends thought Melania would simply be a rebound. They briefly split in 1999 and 2000. During that time, he started dating Norwegian businesswoman Celina Midelfart.
Melania revealed that his presidential run in 2000 caused their temporary split. 7
“When we were dating in 1999, he was thinking about running with the Reform Party,” she told Dujour magazine. She added that he was too focused on the campaign. “We were apart for a few months, not long. We got back together. He was always thinking about [a presidential run]. But he loved what he did, he had his business.”
The only time Donald visited Melania's native country of Slovenia was in 2002. 8
They arrived in a private jet and had dinner with Melania's parents. Before midnight, the couple jetted back to the United States.
In 2004, Donald proposed to Melania at the Costume Institute Gala in New York. 9
He presented her with a 15-carat $1.5 million diamond engagement ring. "Only a fool would say, 'No thank you, I want to pay a million dollars more for a diamond,'" he told the press.
The couple got married at the Palm Beach at Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea. 11
It was considered the wedding of the year. Even the Clintons attended the big day.
Melania gave birth to their son Barron in March 2006. 12
Trump has five children, including from his previous marriages. “I didn’t want him to change the diapers or put Barron to bed,” she told Parenting.com. “We know our roles,” she added. Their marriage sounds very traditional!
Hours after Barron was born, the proud dad was bragging about the baby news to the media. 13
“I continue to stay young, right? I produce children, I stay young,” the then 59-year-old told MSNBC. Melania was reportedly in labor for 8 hours.
Melania and Donald admitted that they don't have a nanny for son Barron. 14
“I like to be hands-on. I think it’s very important," she told People. That's actually more than most celebs can say. I commend her for it.
Melania and Barron have stayed in New York while President Trump moved to The White House. 15
The Trumps want to wait for Barron to finish his fourth grade at a Manhattan prep school. Donald did confirm to reporters that they'll move, “Very soon. After he’s finished with school."
Melania has said that her relationship with Donald "is a different romance." 16
While promoting her QVC jewelry line in 2013, she spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her romantic relationship with Trump. "He is a romantic guy," she said.
“It's a different romance than maybe some other people [have] but he's [a] very different man anyway...but we have a great relationship and we are both very independent. We love what we do...and that's the most important [thing]. [We] have great quality time together.”
