Selena Gomez is taking a much-needed break to deal with depression & anxiety

It's been a year since Selena Gomez revealed her struggle with lupus, and now she's decided to take some much needed time off to deal with the depression and anxiety the disease has caused. The decision comes shortly after wrapping up her Revival World Tour. We hope she's okay!

"As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways," she told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. "I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges."

"I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues," she added.

Lupus is the same condition that put Gomez in rehab for chemotherapy treatment a few years ago. She also wound up canceling the end of her Stars Dance Tour back in 2013 because of it. It's a serious disease that affects the body's immune system. There are also different forms of lupus, some more serious than others, and include a number of different symptoms that range from headaches, painful and swollen joints, chest pains butterfly-shaped rashes, hair loss, blood clotting and fatigue. Depression and anxiety could also be symptoms folks battling lupus experience, but not a lot of people know this.

"It is not commonly known that depression, anxiety and panic attacks can be side affects of lupus," says Lupus Reseach Alliance co-CEO and co-president, Kenneth M. Farber. "We are so proud of Selena for taking care of herself and bringing awareness to this sometimes very misunderstood illness."

We're sending Gomez nothing but love and light during this difficult time and hoping for a speedy recovery!
