Playboy names first ever Latina Playmate of the Year, but should we be proud?

It looks like Playboy has crowned their first-ever Latina Playmate of the Year, Raquel Pomplun. The gorgeous 25-year-old Mexican American was born in Tijuana, Mexico and raised in Chula Vista, California. And make no mistake, she may be stunning but there's a lot more that makes this girl tick. She's certainly not all looks that's for sure. I just can't believe it took Playboy this long to recognize how amazing us Latinas really are. But on the same note, should we really be happy about this?

Hugh Hefner's newest Playmate certainly has a lot going for herself. Aside from making history, Raquel definitely has some brains. Not only did she major in biochemistry at Southwestern College, but she's also classically trained in ballet. Oh and it doesn't stop there. This overachiever who also happens to be fluent in both English and Spanish, has a TV gig hosting Blackbelt TV's boxing show Rockin Rounds along with a radio gig co-hosting Playboy Radio's Playmate Present. She's graced the cover of Playboy before alongside Bruno Mars for their April 2012 "Sex & Music" issue along with being honored as the April 2012 Playmate of the Month. And you can bet she can pose like it' s nobody's business like she did for her latest spread, despite the fact that she was suffering from a 103-degree fever. Seriously, this girl has so many skills and talents ... I have to say, she couldn't just use them towards something else?

The Mexican beauty also happens to be married, which isn't exactly common for women who have been honored with this title. But her husband, Alejandro, doesn't seem to have a problem with it. In fact, he's actually the one who encouraged her to try posing and submitting photos to the magazine. I have to admit, I don't care how secure your man is, that's a little strange!

It's pretty surprising and even kind of disturbing to me that it took Playboy this long to include a Latina on their Playmate of the Year roster. If you really think about it, their home base is actually Los Angeles, California, a city that has a pretty large population of Latina women. On the other hand, was it better that we didn't ever have this dubious crown? I find this woman too amazing for this position. She studied biochemistry for crying out loud! It makes me a little sad that with everything she has to offer, she's on the cover of Playboy. What kind of message is this sending out to young girls today?
