So much talent has come out of the Dominican Republic! Prince Royce, Romeo Santos, and Juan Luis Guerra rep for the island's music, Charityn Goico and Lourdes Stephen are famous hosts, and Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, and Michelle Rodriguez are some of its most well-known movie stars. All these celebs have more than their Dominican background in common: They all represent and honor their country here in the U.S. To all of them and to all of you Dominican mamás out there that love beautiful Quisqueya: Happy Independence Day!
Although most Latin American countries celebrate their independence when we freed ourselves from Spanish rule, today marks the day Haiti ceased its control of the Dominican Republic, which lasted 22 years until February 27, 1821.

I had no idea! That's why I always say that we truly become Latin Americans when we come to the U.S. and learn all about all the other countries in South America. According to Census figures, this country is home to more than 1.4 million Dominicans, which makes them the fourth largest group of Latinos in the States, after Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans.
And their influence can be seen everywhere. Today, Secretary of State John Kerry gave a formal statement of congratulations for the D.R.'s Independence Day, but it's truly in the world of entertainment where many Dominicans in the U.S. shine.
