Latin Grammys 2012: My experience at the show with the suegra!
About a week ago, L'Oréal Paris reached out to me asking if I could attend this year's Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas as their beauty correspondent. I watch the Latin Grammys religiously every year, so for me this was a dream come true. Little did I know, this amazing opportunity was going to fullfill someone else's dreams as well--my suegra! Just a few days before I was about to take off, I was told there was a chance I would receive a second ticket to the show. That same night I headed over to my boyfriend's house for dinner. After sharing the news with his parents, his mother asked me excitedly if she could go as my guest. I automatically said yes without even giving it a second thought. Clueless about how this decision would result in.

My friends all thought I was nuts for bringing her. But I honestly didn't see what the big deal was, afterall we have always been able to get along. The first few hours in Vegas together was a bit of challenge. Once we made it to the hotel I was on automatic work mode. But "Mami" as we all call her, was ready to do some sight seeing. Even though I had explained to her before the trip that the only time we were really going to spend together was going to be at the shows (and not even because I had to work) she was still hoping that I'd squeeze in a little more time on my schedule for leisure.
That Wednesday night we headed to the 2012 Person of the Year Award Gala with some of PR girls from L'Oréal. I felt a little bad that I was being so stern with Mami, but like I had explained to her earlier, I was here for work not play. Her face lit up as soon as she caught eye of David Bisbal during cocktail hour. She begged me to ask him to take a picture with us. But I refused out of fear of looking unprofessional. Once again I felt like I had disappointed her and was beginning to question if it was fair to her and to myself to have brought her on this business trip.
But those doubts suddenly went away when I saw mami's face light up again once the performances began. " Mira, Juan Luis Guerra!" She cried in disbelief. Pretty soon all her favorite music artists were taking the stage, Juanes, Nelly Furtado and Alejandro Sanz. This was only the gala and I could already sense that Mami was going to have a great time.
The actual night of the Latin Grammys was particularly special. A L'Oréal makeup artist showed up to my hotel room for hair and makeup. Shortly after she left, Mami and I got ready together. While I was on the green carpet trying to score some interviews, she remained on the other side with a few of L'Oréal's other VIP guests. And to my surprise got quite a few of artists to take pictures with her. It was a magical night for Mami, I could see it in her eyes. She'd smile after a great performance and snap away whenever someone she loved hit the stage. Oh and did I mention she recognized EVERY single celebrity there? She knew every face, every name and could break down their background for you in less than two minutes. Pretty impressive, huh?
Overall I have absolutely no regrets. While I'm not going to sit here and lie and say it was a complete walk in the park. Because challenges did in fact present themselves. But in the end, not only did I make one woman's dreams come true with a simple three day trip to Vegas, but ironically enough I feel like it brought us even closer together. "Did you have a good time?" I asked her before we checked out of the hotel Friday morning. "Sí," she said with a smirk, "no me puedo quejar."
