Marc Anthony raises more than $100,000 for Dominican orphans
After all the crazy things we hear about celebrities, it's nice to hear that they're doing good things for a change. Marc Anthony's foundation Maestro Cares held a fundraiser this week which raised more than $100,000 to complete a residence hall and learning facility for children at Orfanatos de Cristo, an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. As much as Anthony is always part of gossip news linked to ex-wife Jennifer Lopez, it's refreshing to hear that he's doing things for a charitable cause.

Anthony co-founded the non-profit Maestro Cares Foundation with Colombian entrepreneur Henry Cardenas earlier this year as a means to help disadvantaged Latin American children. The Orfanatos de Cristo kids are the first to receive money obtained through an auction from Anthony's foundation. Anthony and Cardenas sold many expensive items, including an Oscar de la Renta necklace, a guitar autographed by Mexican rock band Mana, and a jersey signed by soccer player Lionel Messi.
There are so many less fortunate kids in third world countries that could use our help, and of all people, celebrities offer a great influence and attention to these issues. I'm so happy to hear that all those other Latino mega celebrities donated or contributed items for the auction!

I can't imagine how rewarding it must be to have your own charitable foundation. I, for example, always wanted to run my own charity meant to make healthy foods more accessible and affordable for children from low-income homes. Maybe that goal of mine will happen one day, but for now I admire those celebrities and other high- profile figures that are generous enough to give back to society. With all the money they spend on private jets and mansions, it's great to see them giving back.
