On 'America's Got Talent', 19-year-old Marilyn Manson look alike is not what he seems (VIDEO)

Having been an avid viewer of reality talent competitions (I can't help it, they suck me in!), it's been a very long time since any one contestant or audition has genuinely surprised me. That is, until last night on America's Got Talent when Andrew De Leon totally shocked me--and everyone watching--when his performance and amazing vocal skills proved that appearances aren't always what they seem.

With his long jet black hair, dark eye makeup, and (kinda creepy) fake contact lenses, De Leon is the epitome of goth style. The 19-year-old makeup artist even admitted to the camera that he is a longtime fan of rocker Marilyn Manson.  So when he announces that he will be singing, I, like the judges and rest of the audience, assume he's about to go all goth. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Instead, De Leon opened his mouth to reveal a beautiful, soft, operatic voice that literally gave me goosebumps. And I wasn't the only one that was floored by his surprising performance! All three judges' jaws fell open as they watched,l stunned . Meanwhile, the audience rose to their feet, clapping and some even wiping away tears!

De Leon, who had previously confessed that this was his first time singing in public, was also a little shaken but it turns out he didn't need to worry—the judges unanimously voted him onto the next rounds in Vegas.

Wow! Talk about not judging a book by its cover! I'm personally so excited to see what he will do next! His performance was, by far, the most impressive of the entire night and one of the best ones of the entire season. And though I'm always cheering for my fellow Latino contestants, like the Narvaez' and young Sebastian De La Cruz, I think De Leon (who might also be Hispanic, although that hasn't been confirmed…and does it even really matter with that voice?!) is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

I was there at the Austin taping, and please believe me that the editing of his TV appearance was minimal at best. When he began singing, the audience - myself included - reacted as if this were a joke. That reaction was erased within seconds. He was amazing. It was a privilege to have been there for that debut. The close ups on his teary eyes after his song, listening to the audience and the judges' praise was great to see on TV, yet even in the balcony I could feel his emotions. Howard Stern has been talking about this on his show for months now, but unable to give any details. When he would say, "We found an amazing talent in Austin," it was always clear to me that he was talking about Andrew DeLeon.
