Is 'Basketball Wives' star Evelyn Lozada too violent for TV? (VIDEO)
It's no secret that I'm a fan of reality shows, particularly those that focus on talent, like singing and dancing. But can all that "real" drama ever go too far? Apparently, some people think so, at least when it comes to VH1's show 'Basketball Wives'. A recently created petition boycotting Puerto Rican cast member, Evelyn Lozada, and her violent blowups has already gained major support.
Right on the heels of news that the show is being turned into a movie (with 'Basketball Wives' producer Shauni o'Neal and Fox Searchlight), the petition on Change.org calls viewers to protest against Lozada's new spinoff show Ev and Ocho. It has already gained over 21,000 signatures.
"Evelyn Lozada is a bully. The violence on 'Basketball Wives' is horrible and disgraceful....VH1 is rewarding this behavior by giving Evelyn a spinoff. Don't reward negative behavior," writes Alex M., the creator of the petition.
She also clarifies that, "This is not a hate petition against Evelyn Lozada" but that she doesn't approve of seeing "violence amongst women on television for entertainment purposes."

I'm not a fan of 'Basketball Wives' but I have to say the few clips I have seen have left me horrified. I mean, to see a bunch of grown-up women arguing, name-calling, and threatening each other like bratty teenagers is just disturbing and not the least bit entertaining for me. And Lozada is by far one of the worst offenders, often resorting to physical violence when angered. In fact, I've already made it known that I think her terrible temper and apparent inability to control herself gives Latinas a bad reputation.
So I agree with the petiton – to a certain extent. Yes, Lozada's behavior is unacceptable, especially considering she has a young daughter. But it's not like she's the only one on TV to bank off a bad attitude. Have you seen all the crazies on 'The Real Housewives'?

While I absolutely do believe that the world does need to take some sort of action against shows that center on and promote this type of unhealthy drama, it seems unfair to pick one woman out of the pack. Especially because the sad truth is that most channels on TV these days churn out reality show after reality show that focus on the same kind of garbage -- and many get very high ratings.
Hey, I get it, people like drama! But perhaps we can find it in healthy, appropriate, non-violent doses and with well-balanced, stable stars. In fact, producers and cast members should take a cue from another Latina basketball wife --one I'll actually root for!-- La La Anthony. Her show is entertaining and gives you a look into her personal issues, no punches thrown. See, it is possible! Are you listening, Evelyn?
What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with the petition?
