Jessica Sanchez captures audience with two stunning performances on 'American Idol' (VIDEOS)

Last night's American Idol episode transported viewers to the '60s, as the top five contestants were asked to perform hit songs from that decade. And in an apparent nod to Randy Jackson's advice last week when he told her to study Tina Turner, 16-year-old Latina Jessica Sanchez took on the famous track "Proud Mary" and totally embodied the legendary singer.

Sanchez lit up the stage with her performance, tossing her hair around and getting the audience pumped with Turner-esque dance moves.  Her liveliness won over judge Jennifer Lopez, who, last week, critiqued her for not showing enough energy.

"You were a little bit of Tina, a little bit of Beyonce…I love seeing you move, I like seeing you throw your hair around," said Lopez. Steven Tyler agreed, saying "That's the blues, baby," of her vocals.

But, surprisingly, Randy Jackson did not agree with his fellow judges. "I was in a different place. This performance was OK for me, barely OK," he said. "You took on the biggest dragon of the night… [But] I didn't get anything." Um, excuse me, were we watching the same performance, Randy? She might not have been just like Tina herself, but she totally killed it!

Lopez shared my same sentiments, stepping up to argue in Sanchez's defense. "You can't compare a 16-year-old to Tina Turner in her hay day!" she said. Yes! A voice of reason!

In her second performance, Sanchez came back even stronger as if determined to prove Jackson wrong. She sang Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful" (one of my all-time faves, by the way!) and literally almost brought tears to my eyes with her moving performance and amazing vocals.

Her stunning version of the song captivated the whole audience and left Jackson eating his words. "Round one, I was saying I don't know, whatever…Round two, this girl is at the top of the leaderboard right now," he said. "Your talent level is just unbelievable." Yeah, no kidding! He deserves a big, fat "told you so!"

Tyler and Lopez agreed with the praise. "You're gonna be number one girl," said Tyler.

I think so, too! If she doesn't make it through tonight's elimination rounds, I'd be really shocked and disappointed. Her vocal skills are undeniable and she deserves to be in the final two. I hope America will make the right choice!
