Hmmm...Why were Latinos snubbed in the Tony Award nominations?

Before the Tony Nominations came out yesterday, I was absolutely sure that this year was going to be a good one for Latinos in theater. With the revival of Evita hitting the stage in March and Ricky Martin playing one of the title roles as everyman character "Che" in the musical about the life and tragic death of Argentine first lady Eva Perón, it seemed like a sure-fire nomination for the Oscars of the theater world. And if not him, the Tonys had other Latino stars to choose from—including born-in-Argentina Elena Roger, who plays the iconic figure. That's why I was shocked—absolutely shocked—that almost no Latinos were nominated for the Tony Awards this year. How is this possible?

Why were Ricky Martin, Elena Roger and all other Latinos on the Broadway stage snubbed? The only Latino that received any Tony love at all was Dominican-born designer Emilio Sosa, of Project Runway fame and the costume designer for Broadway's Porgy and Bess. Tonys did see some good in the story of Evita, since the production received nominations for "Best Choreography," "Best Revival of a Musical," and the man playing Argentine president Juan Perón, Michael Cerveris, received his fifth Tony nomination—this time for "Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical."

Although Michael received "really lovely messages from Ricky [Martin] and Elena [Roger], almost as soon as it was announced" and Ricky took to his twitter account to send "luv & light 2 all my fellow actor on their Tony award nominations!", I'm still upset as to why he didn't get a nomination himself. I know there's always a lot of actors and performances to choose from, but how could they completely omit all Latino actors from the nominations, especially when there is a huge play like this?!

It's really a shame to me that neither Ricky nor Elena were nominated. Although I haven't seen the play (yet), I know that Ricky Martin is bringing 110% to the role the same way he always does. I just hope that he'll be performing at the Tony Awards, if only to show them how wrong they were about not giving him a nomination. At least that's what I'll be watching out for when the 66th Annual Tony Awards air in June.

What do you think of Ricky Martin and Elena Roger not being nominated for the Tony Awards?
