The Shakira and Britney Spears duet is a bad idea
There can be good duets and there can be bad duets. In one of my favorite duets of all time, Colombian superstar Shakira teamed up with Beyonce for the haunting song “Beautiful Liar” and the appropriately gorgeous video that followed. Now it looks like my favorite cantante may be teaming up with pop princess Britney Spears for a new duet in the works right now.
My first reaction was “WOW! I can’t wait to see it”. And then I remembered that it wasn’t 1999 anymore. Although Perez Hilton is beyond excited to get his hands on the supposed duet song as soon as possible, I just can’t share in the jumping up and down. Am I the only Latina that’s just totally and completely over Britney Spears? Come on, Shaki, you could do better.
I was on Team Britney many, many years ago. When she first started out, I loved dancing to her songs. But she faded and my interest disappeared. Then when she started having some issues (who doesn't remember the shaved head?), I really didn’t care about her anymore. Now she keeps “coming back” and I am just sick and tired of hearing about it. She’s done, I’m over it and the girl needs to just give it up, live off her royalties and take care of her cute baby boys.
Meanwhile, Shakira’s star is only on the rise. I’ve been following her career for a while and even saw her in concert at Madison Square Garden in 2010. She was phenomenal, opening up the show with a beautiful rendition of “Pienso en Ti” and ending it with the always fun “Waka Waka (This time for Africa)”.
She’s done many amazing duets in the past, so why is she now teaming up with a has-been former star who keeps coming back even when nobody really cares? Sources say that the Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am has just signed on as producer, so I’m sure whatever this pairing amounts to will be great. But there’s also no doubt in my mind that the duet will be good because of Shaki’s powerful voice and not Britney’s lame attempts at singing. Here’s hoping that will be enough to make it all a success.
Are you excited for the potential duet between Latina superstar Shakira and pop princess Britney Spears?
