Switch to all natural products. 1
"Overall, families should be concerned with not using harsh chemicals and products with sulfate, which strips the hair from its natural state and moisture," Ceballos-Crump says. "Understanding what you apply on your hair and skin is very important to your overall health. I wanted to provide the best ingredients for my consumers. I didn’t want any parabens or negative ingredients in my products. I use alternatives such as carrot oil, avocado oil, and shea butter. Basically, it’s important to understand that products that are rich in natural ingredients perform better than synthetic products."
Moisture is key. 2
"Moisture is important because it prevents breakage and promotes hair growth," says Ceballos-Crump. "I would recommend using lots of natural oils and butters on your hair, incorporating oil treatments in your hair regimen and using natural ingredients like honey." Ceballos-Crump recommends the Honey Baby Naturals Shea Butter Hair Smoothie ($13). "It’s a great leave-in styler and it can be used daily. It’s made with 30% natural oils and butters so it penetrates the hair without weighing it down," she adds.
Exfoliate your scalp. 3
"A lot of products leave residue and build-up on the scalp, so it’s important to use a shampoo to free your scalp from that debris and build-up,” says Ceballos-Crump. Try a cleansing serum like DevaCurl Buildup Buster ($28) or a scalp scrub before cleansing like Kiehl’s Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment ($20).
Detangling doesn’t have to be a nightmare. 5
"Leave-in conditioners are important because they help to remove knots and tangles from the hair, as well as protect the hair from breakage," says Ceballos-Crump who recommends the Honey Baby Naturals Knot My Honey Instant Detangler ($13).
She has tips for heat damage. 6
"I would first recommend a good trim and constant trims to remove the damaged hair," Ceballos-Crump says. "Use products with plenty of moisture for the hair. Develop a good weekly regimen that includes hot oil treatments and masks. To restore the natural curls, it’s critical to coat the hair with products that focus on hydration, healing and protecting. This promotes growth and ensures long beautiful locks."
